Comparing the embodied carbon and cost of concrete floor solutions

Multi-objective optimisation of concrete floors for economic and environmental performance is critical in the present context since building construction sector responsible a rising share global economy greenhouse gas emissions. This study explores how designs with optimum cost embodied carbon are governed by selection floor system column spacing. Discrete were generated parametrically varying spacing eight different forms available practice. Pareto optimal solutions cradle-to-gate identified range spacings. The trends sensitivity also investigated due to inherent uncertainty potential variations constituents. Column spacings can be increased up 2 m than optimum, compromising or only 10% their nonlinear relationship, depending on slab type. Post-tensioning reduce flat slabs spans longer 7 but do not reach optimality cheaper similar levels carbon. Flat suggested as within 6 m–8 when time storey height considered, reduced cost.
